Las casas bananeras de Costa Rica son un legado arquitectónico y social de la United Fruit Company, construidas a inicios del siglo XX para sus trabajadores y administradores en las zonas del Caribe y luego en el Pacífico Sur, con diseños distintivos que reflejaban la jerarquía social, pero también representaban la explotación laboral, la introducción de nuevas culturas y el impacto ambiental a través de los monocultivos y agroquímicos, dejando una profunda huella en el paisaje y la historia
“The girl with the silk scarf and dragonfruits” 2025, Fabiola De Ford, silk and acrylic on canvas, Potrero Beach, Costa Rica. My first inspiration was the beautiful model wearing one of my scarf designs and the pink banana style house at Penca Beach. The banana houses of Costa Rica are an architectural and social legacy of the United Fruit Company, built in the early 20th century for its workers and administrators in the Caribbean and later in the South Pacific, with distinctive designs that reflected social hierarchy, but also representing labor exploitation, the introduction of new cultures, and environmental impact through monoculture and agrochemicals, leaving a deep mark on the Costa Rican landscape and history. *********************************
